Flooring Defect Investigations
Service 01

Flooring Defect Investigations

When something is wrong with your floor, you need to know why — and who is responsible.

Flooring failures rarely happen without a cause. Whether the issue is cupping, buckling, delamination, excessive wear, cracking, or surface defects, a thorough investigation identifies the root cause — and distinguishes between a manufacturing defect, an installation error, and a site condition.

Robert Hughston has spent decades on both sides of these disputes — as a manufacturer's representative and as an independent inspector. That experience means he knows exactly what manufacturers look for, how they document findings, and where claims are commonly mischaracterized or denied.

Every investigation includes a detailed written report with photographic documentation, moisture readings where applicable, and a clear opinion on causation — suitable for use in warranty disputes, litigation, or insurance claims.

This service includes

  • On-site inspection and measurement
  • Moisture testing (concrete and wood subfloor)
  • Photographic documentation
  • Root cause analysis — manufacturing, installation, or site
  • Written report with expert opinion
  • Expert witness testimony available

Pre-Installation Consultations
Service 02

Pre-Installation Consultations

The best time to prevent a flooring failure is before the floor goes down.

Most flooring problems are preventable. Improper subfloor preparation, inadequate acclimation, moisture issues, and product mismatches are among the most common causes of premature failure — and all of them can be identified and addressed before installation begins.

A pre-installation consultation evaluates the site conditions, the specified product, and the proposed installation method against manufacturer requirements and industry standards. The goal is a long-life installation that performs as expected.

Available for residential and commercial projects of any scale, including new construction, renovation, and replacement installations.

This service includes

  • Subfloor assessment and moisture testing
  • Product suitability review for site conditions
  • Installation method evaluation
  • Acclimation and environmental requirements
  • Written pre-installation report and recommendations
  • Follow-up consultation available

Declined Claim Report Review & Investigations
Service 03

Declined Claim Report Review & Investigations

A denied claim is not necessarily a final answer.

Manufacturer warranty claims are frequently denied on the basis of installation error or site conditions — even when the evidence points to a product defect. Understanding how manufacturers evaluate and document claims is essential to challenging those decisions effectively.

Robert Hughston spent 10 years at Mohawk Industries handling claims across every major flooring category, and later authored claims policies for a rigid core manufacturer as U.S. National Sales Manager. He knows how these decisions are made — and where they can be wrong.

An independent investigation provides an objective second opinion, with documentation that can support a formal appeal, legal action, or negotiated resolution with the manufacturer or retailer.

This service includes

  • Review of manufacturer's denial and supporting documentation
  • Independent on-site inspection
  • Analysis against manufacturer installation guidelines
  • Identification of manufacturing vs. installation causation
  • Written report suitable for appeal or litigation
  • Expert witness testimony available
